Southwest Airlines Austin flights are officially coming to Sonoma County, adding a new nonstop route from Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport to Texas this fall. The announcement marks another expansion for the Dallas based carrier even before it fully launches operations at the Santa Rosa airport.

Beginning Oct. 3, Southwest Airlines Austin flights will connect Sonoma County directly to Austin Bergstrom International Airport. The service will operate on Saturdays and run on a seasonal schedule, according to airport officials.

New Nonstop Link Between Sonoma and Austin

Travelers will be able to book nonstop Southwest Airlines Austin flights starting Oct. 3. Early listings show a departure from Sonoma County at 11:10 a.m., arriving in Austin at 4:45 p.m., with a flight time of approximately three and a half hours.

The Austin route becomes the latest addition to Southwest’s growing presence at the Sonoma County airport. The airline is scheduled to begin service at the Santa Rosa facility on April 7 with nonstop flights to Burbank, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Denver.

This marks the second time Southwest has expanded its Sonoma offerings before officially starting operations. In December, the carrier increased its Denver route from Saturdays only to five days a week beginning Aug. 26.

Airport officials say demand has been strong, with advanced bookings signaling solid interest from North Bay travelers.

A Long Awaited Partnership

The launch of Southwest Airlines Austin flights follows years of effort to bring the airline to Sonoma County. Airport leaders have previously said discussions with Southwest stretched back more than a decade.

Earlier runway limitations prevented the airport from accommodating the carrier’s aircraft. After runway improvements and changes to Southwest’s network planning, the long discussed partnership became possible.

Airport management has indicated optimism that if passenger demand remains steady, seasonal routes like Austin could eventually expand.

Policy Changes for Travelers

As Southwest Airlines Austin flights open for booking, passengers should be aware of recent policy updates by the airline.

Southwest has ended its longstanding open seating system. The carrier now assigns seats, with ticket prices varying based on seat selection.

The airline has also revised its policy for passengers who require extra seating space. Travelers needing an additional seat must purchase it during booking or risk paying higher same day rates.

Another major change involves baggage fees. Southwest ended its decades old two bags fly free policy in 2025. Most passengers now pay $35 for a first checked bag and $45 for a second.

What It Means for the North Bay

The addition of Southwest Airlines Austin flights strengthens Sonoma County Airport’s position as a growing regional travel hub. A direct link to Austin opens access to one of the country’s fastest growing tech and business markets while offering leisure travelers a convenient connection to Central Texas.

Local officials believe the new route will benefit tourism, business travel, and regional economic ties between Northern California and Texas.

With more destinations already scheduled and additional routes being added ahead of launch, Southwest’s expansion signals increasing confidence in demand from North Bay passengers.

As bookings begin for fall travel, Sonoma County residents now have another direct option for reaching a major U.S. city without the need to drive to larger Bay Area airports.
